Alcaraz’s feat at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships excited the world
Carlos Alcaraz’s feat at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships excited the world. The young Spaniard has achieved great results at just 21 years and seems destined to make the history of this sport by undermining the records of the Big 3.
The former world number 1 has repeated several times that he wants to match the greatest ever and his numbers are crazy in relation to age. Although he still has ups and downs, Carlitos is able to express a formidable level of tennis in some situations and it will not be easy for opponents to find a way to defeat him.
At the moment, Jannik Sinner seems to be the only player who can keep up with Alcaraz. The Italian and Spanish have played some epic matches and their rivalry should characterize the male tour in the next decade.
Novak Djokovic – on the other hand – is not the most successful player in a few years and the Wimbledon final was a real blow for the Serbian champion. The 37-year-old from Belgrade, who has not yet won a title in 2024, will try to redeem himself at the Paris Olympics later this month. The gold medal is one of the few awards that are still missing from the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
Despite his victory at Church Road, Alcaraz remained world number 3 behind Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic. The Spaniard will have the chance to return to the top in the second half of the season, where he will defend less points than Sinner and Djokovic.
Alcaraz changes his schedule
Meanwhile, it has been announced that Carlos Alcaraz will play the ATP 500 in Rotterdam next year. The Dutch tournament – in which Jannik Sinner (winner this year) will also participate – will take place from 3rd to 9th February 2025. This decision casts serious doubt on Carlitos’ presence at the ‘South American gira’.
Alcaraz and Sinner are destined to face each other many times in the coming years. The young Spaniard and the Italian ace have already clashed several times, but never in a Grand Slam final. During a long interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, ATP legend Stan Smith paid tribute to Alcaraz and Sinner: “Sinner and Alcaraz are the present, but above all the future of tennis and will give rise to a long-standing rivalry. Jannik must continue to work on the serve where he has already improved considerably. For Carlos – instead – the advice is less technical but more about the emotional sphere: “Carlos sometimes has moments of disorder or distraction on which he must work”.
After Wimbledon the two tennis players will now be engaged directly at the Paris Olympics, which will be staged from 27th July to 4th August. For the Italian will be a wonderful opportunity to redeem after the scorching elimination by the hands of Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals. This is different for the 21-year-old Spaniard, who will want to confirm the incredible level that he is going through.
Carlitos remains humble
Although he has already achieved outstanding results, Carlos has always remained humble: “I have had many successes, four majors, many triumphs, but in the end I consider a champion the legends who have many titles and many ‘Grand Slams’, whether it is 14, 15, 9, 10. I won’t consider myself a champion until I have double figures in Grand Slams. At 10 Grand Slam titles, I’ll start thinking I’m getting closer to sitting at the same table as them.
I don’t know what the future will bring. In the end, the future is uncertain and everything can happen in a few years, there can be many twists and turns, both for one side or the other. We can’t take anything for granted. What I can say is that we are going to fight. We know we are on the right path, doing things right. If we continue with this ambition, this desire to train and fight every day, I think I can do great things, so let’s go this way and see what the future holds.”
At the Paris Olympics – which will be played on the red clay of the French Open – Alcaraz will be among the big favorites in singles and doubles. Carlitos will play with his illustrious countryman Rafa Nadal, who has already won the gold medal in doubles in Rio 2016 together with his current coach Marc Lopez. Alcaraz will have to pay particular attention to Sinner and Djokovic, while the participation of Sascha Zverev (who injured his knee at Wimbledon) is uncertain. The German – at the moment – is registered at the ATP 500 in Hamburg this week.
