Cam Thomas Scores 40, But Nets’ Rally Falls Short Against Spurs

Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas delivered a remarkable performance on Sunday, scoring 40 points in a 118–107 loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Despite Thomas’ offensive surge, the Nets were unable to overcome a significant deficit, continuing their winless start to the 2025–26 NBA season.

Historic Milestone Amidst Adversity

Thomas’ 40-point game marked his 10th career 40-point performance, tying him with Kevin Durant for the third-most in franchise history. He joins Vince Carter and Kyrie Irving as the only players in Nets history with 10 or more such games. His scoring included a difficult three-pointer late in the game, showcasing his ability to make challenging shots under pressure.

Despite playing through a nasal fracture and facial stitches sustained in a previous game, Thomas continued to lead the Nets’ offense. His resilience and scoring prowess were evident, even as the team struggled to close out games.

Team Struggles and Injuries

The Nets faced significant challenges throughout the game, including a 26-point third-quarter deficit. While they mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter, they were ultimately outpaced by standout performances from Spurs stars Victor Wembanyama and rookie Dylan Harper. Wembanyama recorded 31 points, 14 rebounds, and six blocks, while Harper added 20 points and was a +33 on the court.

In addition to Thomas’ injury, the Nets also dealt with a back contusion to Ziaire Williams, further depleting their roster. Head coach Jordi Fernández praised the team’s resilience but acknowledged the need for improved urgency and execution, particularly in the early stages of games.

Looking Ahead

The Nets will look to regroup as they prepare for their next game against the Houston Rockets. With Thomas continuing to lead the offense and the team addressing its injury concerns, Brooklyn aims to secure its first victory of the season and build momentum for the challenges ahead.
